MIDI Hardware Control and "Old School" Mode

What is MIDI Hardware Control?

This technology allows ANY MIDI controller to operate OtsAV DJ Pro. You can now start and stop your tracks, increase or decrease pitch/tempo, scratch, frame seek, set a cue point and even crossfade, using a professional MIDI controller. This means you no longer need to remember lots of keyboard shortcuts, and allows for much quicker song manipulation.

Which controllers can be used with OtsAV DJ Pro?

Any controller that has MIDI capabilities can be used with OtsAV DJ Pro. These include controllers such as the Denon HC4500, Denon HD2500, and the Behringer BCD 2000/3000 models. (pictured below)

Most MIDI controllers offer 2-way MIDI communication, which allows OtsAV to control the displays and LEDs on these controllers. These are the recommended type of controller to use. Devices that only offer 1-way MIDI communication can also be used to control OtsAV DJ Pro, however the lights and LEDs on these controllers cannot be MIDI controlled.

What features are added to OtsAV DJ Pro when using a MIDI controller?

  • Familiar controls (same as most professional dual CD players)
  • Visual notification of deck states (e.g. Playing, Cued, Frame seeking, Time remaining/elapsed display)
  • Audio outputs can be setup in Old School mode, allowing mixing via two channels on an external mixer
  • Scratching on both decks at the same time (using jog wheels)
  • EQ filtering and EQ Kill Switches
  • Navigate Playlist, Work, and History list areas.
  • Load song to Deck control
  • Stutter Play
  • Cue in Scratch mode
  • Zorphing (Scratching with Tempo)
  • Fine adjustments on Pitch/Tempo/Direction sliders
  • Jog wheels can be used to Scratch, Pitch/Tempo bend, or Frame Seek
  • Video block per deck and Video Master deck select
  • Instant response on all controls
  • All buttons, faders, and jog wheels can be assigned to different functions within OtsAV

Some MIDI controllers also include an in-built dual-channel soundcard. OtsAV can make use of these inbuilt soundcards, including ASIO support.

Old School Mode

OtsAV allows the routing of audio from Deck A and Deck B to two independent audio outputs. In simple terms, Deck A can be set to use one set of stereo pairs, connected to Channel 1 on your external mixer, and Deck B can be set to a different set of stereo pairs, connected to Channel 2 on your external mixer.

The term "Old School" refers to the way in which equipment is connected to use one mixer channel per deck. Using conventional hardware (turntables, CD players, mixing console), DJs usually have to ride the volume sliders on their mixer to achieve consistant volume levels throughout their performance.

Even in "Old School" mode, OtsAV's Dynamics Processor takes care of any volume changes in an elegant manner. Some DJs prefer to have full control over the mix, and can do so if desired by turning off the dynamics processor. You can now connect your equipment in the same way you would have done using conventional DJ hardware in the past.
